Quilts of Gee's Bend

Gee's Bend is a small rural community in Alabama. The women traditionally use whatever fabric they can get hold of, and their style is distinctive, bold, and sophisticated, based on traditional American (and African American) quilts, but with a geometric simplicity reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern art.

Prelude IV
His soul stretched tight across the skies
That fade behind a city block,
Or trampled by insistent feet
At four and five and six o'clock;
And short square fingers stuffing pipes,
And evening newspapers, and eyes
Assured of certain certainties,
The conscience of a blackened street
Impatient to assume the world.
I am moved by fancies that are curled
Around these images, and cling:
The notion of some infinitely gentle
Infinitely suffering thing.
Wipe your hand across your mouth, and laugh;
The worlds revolve like ancient women
Gathering fuel in vacant lots.
TS Eliot, 1917

Books from Jane
My friend Jane gave me these two books, both of which I loved. Mangoes is a political satire, about the assassination of General Zia. It's clever, funny, and interesting. Lush Life is set in the Lower East Side of New York, and is gritty and smart and a brilliant read. I don't know how he manages to capture the dialogue and the scene without becoming cheesy: great writing. Reviews in the hyper-links. Thanks Jane!
