Enchanted Palace

These were snapped at the "Enchanted Palace" - installations in Kensington Palace. Actually quite magical, and definitely worth a look. They've asked 6 British designers to create installations, themed around some of the princesses who have lived in the Palace. There are guides wandering around who can fill you in on what it's all about. A lovely way to spend a Friday evening.

The pink dress on the staircase above is by Vivienne Westwood.

A little bit of Royal trivia I learned was that when Prince Charles takes the throne, he is likely to change his name to George. The name Charles is considered inauspicious, because Charles I is the only member of the monarchy to have been executed (in 1649, after the English Civil War, brought about the short-lived republic under Oliver Cromwell). Charles II, the son of Charles I, returned to the throne at the Restoration in 1660, after spending 18 years in exile overseas, but was mocked as the Merry Monarch because he had a string of mistresses, including the orange-seller Nell Gwyn. There is also some sensitivity about Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender (who was known as Charles III by his supporters), who launched the 1745 Jacobie rising, the last Scottish campaign on English soil. It would also be a tribute to his grandfather if Prince Charles took the name George VII.

Tea-Time

I like these trays that the men carry tea-glasses on in Turkey. The move at speed, and manage not to spill tea everywhere (I would be too clumsy to be trusted with one).

Furniture Hunting

I'm looking for a desk chair, a desk lamp, and some 'storage solutions' (bookshelves and/or filing cabinet/storage boxes). I want something a bit different - by which I really just mean not plain and boring - but am not fussy about style... vintage/retro, but not grotty; or maybe European/antique; or Danish/Swedish; or even new, but just not too utilitarian. I like mixing styles.

So I've been doing a bit of searching around, and came across these sites, which I'm recording here so I can find them later.

Elemental (I've been to their store in Spitalfields; they're also in Selfridges)

Graeme and Green (nice things, quite romantic. I love their mirrored tables, and I got my pineapple lamp from them)

Raft (lots of natural wood)

The Conran Shop (well out of my price range... those Eames chairs - sigh)
This is also a handy site: House to Home

I quite like these desk lamps (from G & G), but they seem only to have them left in red...
This is quite nice too - leather chair from John Lewis - but I'll have to check whether it's comfortable enough.

How they don't set fire the the balloon when they're inflating/setting up for take-off is something of a mystery!!

Cave Hotel

We stayed in a cave hotel in Goreme (Cappadocia), called Local Cave House. It's one of the few hotels that has a pool. We booked a little double room, but after a couple of nights they upgraded us to the honeymoon suite (woohoo!). Cute little hotel - I would definitely recommend it. The showers in the regular rooms are pretty interesting (impossible to avoid water going absolutely everywhere), but it's very inexpensive, right in the middle of town, and the staff were super friendly. By the pool (not visible in these pictures) there's a canopied area with comfy cushions where you can lounge. It unfortunately rained quite a lot while we were there, so it was the perfect place to relax and chat, read, have tea and Turkish Delight.
